Online transactions later this year |
In order to provide on-line (internet) transactions, such as renewal of vehicle licences, before the end of the year, the Department of Transport had to replace the old NaTIS system with the eNaTIS. The old NaTIS, a mainframe-like system, operated in a closed environment which in effect nullified the possibility of providing on-line transactions over the internet.
The eNaTIS is introduced in a phased manner. At the launch of the eNaTIS on 17 April 2007 the core system was put into production with an additional functionality of a national booking system.
It is important to note that on-line transactions are NOT available at this point in time, but will be introduced before the end of 2007. This web site (www.enatis.com) at this point in time serves as a primary source of information to the public in respect of latest news, procedures to be followed, where to go, downloadable application forms and offering forums where people can enter into debate on applicable matters. The public will also be kept up to date with progress on the introduction of on-line transactions as well as transactions through automated teller machines (ATM's).

One million transactions reached |
Just after 3pm on Thursday 19 April 2007, almost exactly a week after the eNaTIS went live, the millionth transaction was processed. Almost a third of the million transactions were performed on Thursday. The system has been performing well on Thursday and feedback from users in the provinces was largely positive.
The upgrades that was made in the data centre the previous day seemed to have stabilised the platform and it is expected that users will continually become more comfortable with the system.
The latest statistics as at 4:30pm on Thursday 19 April can be found below.

The eNaTIS, up and running since 12 April 2007, has surpassed a transaction rate of 12 transactions per second on the morning of 19 April 2007. The system's processing capacity was extensively increased during the night of 18 April by adding an additional powerful application server into the data centre located in Midrand. The additional processing power almost doubles the processing capacity of the data centre. Further expansion will take place this afternoon when an additional database server will also be added.
Some 860 sites performed almost 890,000 transactions by 1 pm on Thursday 19 April 2007. At 10 am a transaction rate of 45,000 transactions per hour was measured, translating into a transaction rate of 12,5 transactions per second. It is expcted that the number of transactions during the first week of operation will surpass one million.
The total number of transactions that were performed per site since 12 April 2007 until 1 pm on Thursday 19 April 2007 is given below (click on "Read More...")
