Renewal licence letter never came - 2008/07/27 23:48 Hi

My boyfriend is overseas and I have his car. I have been waiting for his car licence renewal letter since June, but it never came.

I was then away for 3 weeks in July, so it has passed the grace period. What must I do now?

Re:Renewal licence letter never came - 2008/07/29 17:51 Post email to the webmaster (Contact us at the bottom) with the licence number, the situation will be assessed. Normal procedure is to apply for licence with form ALV and certified copy of owner ID.

I now have another query.

My brother is working overseas (long-term contract). The renewal letter for his driver's licence came about a month before it expires. Because he has to apply in person, he has written to the issuing authority explaining his work situation and he cannot return to SA in time to renew the licence.

Weeks have passed now and he has not heard anything. He has asked me to find if there is alternative route. He will be penalised by renewing late, even though he has written to the authority before the expiry date?

Your suggestion is much appreciated.

Re:Renewal licence letter never came - 2008/08/09 03:05 The issuing authority might still answer his enquiry, but no real solution exist for this situation. The problem regarding foreigners whose SA driving licence cards expire, has been discussed at length but the authorities (Transport and Foreign Affairs) have not yet arrived at a solution. No penalty is levied for late renewal of a driving licence card. He will have to apply for a TDL and new card before driving in SA, but he might be without a valid licence until that is done.

Re:Renewal licence letter never came - 2008/08/26 02:26 I am in the same position - I don't keep track of which license comes when, so my one car is now WAY overdue - about 8 months! The service centre apologised and said they had a problem in December sending out letters which is why I never got one. (1) Does the onus still rest on me in such circumstances and must I still pay the penalty? (2) can I go to any centre to renew or must go to the orinal issuing authority?

Re:Renewal licence letter never came - 2008/08/28 06:54 A renewal notice is not a prerequisite for the licensing of a vehicle, application shall be made on form ALV if the renewal notice is not received. Vehicle licences may be renewed from two months before the licence expires until day 22 after the licence expiry date. Licensing must be done at the appropriate registering authority for the owner's registered street address.
The liability to licence remains, especially as the licence expiry date appears on the licence disk, visibly displayed on the vehicle.
I have put reminders on my cell phone for the licence renewal.
