Summary of Statistics for April 2009 PDF Print E-mail
The National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) recorded a month-on-month drop of 30.14% in vehicle introductions in April 2009 (33 035 vehicle introductions compared to 47 285 in March 2009), providing further evidence of the acute decrease in vehicle sales reported by industry analysts and widely reported on in the media. A year-on-year comparison paints an even bleaker picture, with 53.76% fewer vehicles being introduced in April this year compared to April 2008 (71 437 vehicle introductions).

ppp_itran_clp_stickshift_c_99.pngIt should, however, also be noted that there were three public holidays during the month as compared to only one during April 2008. It goes without saying that the fact that there were fewer business days contributed to the decrease in transaction volumes.

The above-mentioned statistics reflect vehicles introduced on to the eNaTIS for the first time and all such vehicles are not necessarily new ones. Against this background new vehicle registration statistics (available here ) provide a clearer but not much cheerier picture. A comparison of new vehicle registrations (across all classes) in April 2009 and April 2008 reveals a decline of 44.47%.

Applying the same comparison to used vehicle registrations (available here ) shows a far less dramatic decrease of 12.28%.

Returning to the general picture, the eNaTIS recorded a total of 13 249 616 transactions in April 2009. Significant year-on-year growth was experienced in reports executed* (up by 43.06%) and vehicle licensing (up by 16.01%).

The Johannesburg service centre once again performed the most transactions (732 127) followed by Pretoria (582 190) the City of Cape Town (546 278), Durban (283 259) and Port Elizabeth (156 525).

With 35 423 transactions BMW SA was the most active non-governmental entity using a system-to-system interface with the eNaTIS, followed by Volkswagen of SA (33 081), TransUnion HPI (32 350), Mercedes-Benz of SA (30 226) and Smith Mining Equipment (24 569).
