Motorists in Gauteng can now renew their vehicle licences at participating post offices in the province. This is the first phase in a joint venture by the South African Post Office (SAPO) and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, and is bound to go a long way towards easing pressure at service centres.

In addition to the fact that there are a large number of post offices located conveniently close to Gauteng residents, many post offices are also open on Saturdays and, in some instances, Sundays.

sapo_pic.pngVehicle licensing is one of the ‘big six’ transactions on the National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) in terms of volume – in June 2009 alone, 894 116 such transactions were performed (although it should be noted that not all of these were renewals). Further phases of this joint initiative will see the introduction of a number of other transactions at post offices.

Gauteng is the fourth province to partner with SAPO in this regard. Motorists in the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal have been able to renew vehicle licences at participating post offices for some time now, and the initiative has proved to be a resounding success.

The eNaTIS communications team visited the Gezina post office in Pretoria to experience the process first-hand. Courtesy of a dedicated vehicle-licence renewal counter and well-trained staffer, the renewal process took an astonishing five minutes to complete – certainly a far cry from the lengthy wait that members of the public often have to face at service centres where numerous transactions are performed.

Motorists must produce a printed renewal notice and an ID book to renew a vehicle license.  If they do not have a renewal notice, motorists can complete the relevant documentation for the licence to be processed.

It is important to note that motorists should visit a post office within their area of residence: for example, a Johannesburg resident will not be able to renew his or her vehicle licence at a Pretoria post office.

This and future initiatives between transport authorities and strategic will most definitely improve motorists’ service experience and ensure that the adaptable and feature-rich eNaTIS is utilised to the fullest extent.
